Freelander 8
The legendary “Freelander” nameplate is back, but not as you know it. FREELANDER has officially debuted as an independent, luxury NEV (New Energy Vehicle) brand—a joint venture between Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Chery.
The brand’s flagship model, the Freelander 8, made its world premiere today. Positioned as a “Luxury Tech All-Terrain SUV,” it aims to combine British off-road DNA with China’s most advanced intelligent driving stack.
1. Design: Heritage Meets “Boxy” Futurism
The Freelander 8 stays true to the Concept 97 design philosophy, featuring a classic “boxy” silhouette that pays homage to legendary off-roaders while embracing a minimalist, modern aesthetic.
- Front Fascia: A clean, grille-less front end features matrix square headlights and ISD (Interlocked Pixel Matrix) lights, creating a high-recognition digital signature.
- Presence: With a length exceeding 5.1 meters, the vehicle commands a massive presence.
- Integrated Hardware: The LiDAR and roof racks are seamlessly integrated into the roofline to maintain aerodynamic efficiency and a sleek profile.
2. The “Power of Three”: Huawei, Qualcomm, & CATL
The Freelander 8 is the result of a deep technical collaboration between three industry giants to create a full-stack smart solution.
Huawei Qiankun ADS 4.1
Every Freelander 8 comes standard with Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 4.1 intelligent driving system.
- Next-Gen Perception: It features a world-first 896-line LiDAR. This sensor can detect a 14cm obstacle from 120 meters away.
- Extreme Terrain Mapping: In forests or deserts, the LiDAR captures millimeter-level terrain changes, providing “Physical Truth” data for the smart driving system.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8397 Chip
The Freelander 8 is the first to skip the current 8295 standard for the Snapdragon 8397.
- CPU: 3x faster than the previous generation.
- GPU: Nearly 3x performance boost.
- NPU: A staggering 12x increase in AI processing power, essential for real-time all-terrain data calculation.
3. i-ATS: Redefining Off-Road Intelligence
Developed with Huawei Yinwang, the Freelander 8 introduces the i-ATS (Intelligent All-Terrain System).
- Advanced Hardware: Equipped with a front mechanical differential lock, rear e-LSD, virtual center lock, and a closed dual-chamber air suspension.
- Predictive Passing: Using the 896-line LiDAR and binocular cameras, the system predicts road conditions in milliseconds and pre-adjusts the suspension and torque distribution across 20 verified terrain types.
4. Interior: Classic Luxury, Digital Focus
Inside, the Freelander 8 balances traditional luxury with a massive pillar-to-pillar panoramic screen.
- Interface: The dashboard integrates navigation, speed, and climate into a single high-definition glass panel.
- Heritage Touches: Physical knobs and the steering wheel design feature tactile elements that evoke the tactile feel of classic Land Rover models, ensuring the brand’s soul remains intact despite the digital overhaul.
Market Outlook: The New Luxury Standard
The Freelander 8 is scheduled for a full technical disclosure in June 2026, with an official market launch in the second half of 2026. By combining JLR’s chassis tuning and supply chain with Chery and Huawei’s tech ecosystem, the Freelander 8 isn’t just a new SUV—it’s a blueprint for how legacy luxury brands can survive and thrive in the EV era.
