Hongqi Global SUV
Hongqi, the iconic Chinese luxury marque, has officially entered a new era with the debut of its first-ever “Global SUV“ at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show. Positioned as a strategic pillar for the brand’s international expansion, this compact-to-midsize SUV is not just a new model—it is the first fruit of the high-profile partnership between FAW Hongqi and Leapmotor.
1. The Power of Partnership: Hongqi x Leapmotor
The “Global SUV” (project code G117) represents a unique “State-Owned + Private Tech” synergy. According to the strategic agreement:
- Leapmotor provides the “brains” and “nerves,” including its self-developed Leap 3.0 electrification architecture, intelligent cockpit, and autonomous driving tech.
- Hongqi leverages its legendary manufacturing heritage, traditional powertrain expertise, and premium supply chain resources.
This collaboration allows Hongqi to rapidly deploy competitive smart EV technology as it prepares to launch 15 electric and hybrid models across 25 global markets by 2028.
2. Design: “Diamond Star River” Aesthetics
The Global SUV merges Hongqi’s classic “majestic” design with a modern, aerodynamic minimalist approach suitable for global tastes.
- Front View: A clean, closed fascia identifies it as an NEV, accented by a lower intake grille and sharp headlight clusters featuring a “Diamond Star River” lighting effect.
- Side Profile: The vehicle features sleek, semi-hidden door handles and 20-inch five-spoke “petal” wheels, emphasizing a sporty yet sophisticated urban look.
- Rear Design: Echoing the popular Hongqi HS5, the rear features a revamped full-width LED light bar with blackened detailing for a more aggressive, youthful character.
3. Predicted Specifications & Intelligence
While full technical sheets are pending, industry insiders and show data suggest the Global SUV will be a powerhouse of efficiency:
- Architecture: Likely built on a high-voltage platform (potentially 800V) with CTC 2.0 (Cell-to-Chassis) battery integration.
- Performance: Expected to offer both BEV (Battery Electric) and EREV (Extended Range) powertrains, with the EREV version targeting a combined range of over 1,200 km.
- Smart Cockpit: Anticipated to run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8650 chip, ensuring a lag-free experience for its 27-in-1 integrated thermal management and multi-screen setup.
4. Market Outlook: Target “Global Lifestyle”
Hongqi’s official overseas channels have emphasized that this SUV is designed for “Global Lifestyles.” Unlike the brand’s traditional chauffeur-driven limousines, this model targets young professionals and modern families who value daily comfort, refined travel, and intelligent safety.
Production is expected to begin in the second half of 2026, with rumors suggesting it may even be manufactured in European facilities (such as Stellantis’ Zaragoza plant) to bypass regional tariffs and better serve the EU market.
