Stelato SUV
The landscape of Huawei’s Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA) is about to get more diverse. Recently, spy shots of the highly anticipated Stelato rugged SUV surfaced online, following a confirmation from Richard Yu (Yu Chengdong) that a “hardcore” SUV would join the Stelato lineup within the year.
This new model, a collaboration between Huawei and BAIC (Beijing Automotive Industry Holding), is positioned to offer a unique value proposition compared to existing HIMA models like the AITO or Luxeed series.
Boxy Aesthetics and Hardcore Design
The leaked photos show a test vehicle parked outside the BAIC BluePark factory, revealing a design language that leans heavily into the “boxy” off-road trend:
- Front End: The SUV features distinct rectangular headlight clusters with a combination of semi-circular and circular internal lenses. The outer ring serves as the Daytime Running Light (DRL), while the inner lens acts as the main projector.
- Aerodynamics & Cooling: Unlike many pure EVs, this model retains a visible front intake grille, suggesting it might feature an EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) powertrain or high-performance cooling requirements.
- Tech Integration: A prominent LiDAR unit is visible on the roof, signaling that the SUV will be equipped with the flagship Huawei ADS (Advanced Driving System) for high-level autonomous driving.
Dimensions and Proportions
The side profile of the Stelato SUV suggests a substantial footprint:
- Chassis Layout: The vehicle utilizes a “short overhang, long wheelbase” design, which maximizes interior space while improving approach and departure angles for potential off-road use.
- Visual Cues: The window lines and body contours are sharp and angular, consistent with its rugged, “go-anywhere” persona.
Performance: Rugged Looks or Rugged Capability?
Previous “mule car” spy shots of the Stelato SUV provide a glimpse into its mechanical DNA:
- Chassis Structure: Interestingly, the chassis appears to use a unibody construction rather than a traditional ladder frame (body-on-frame).
- Suspension: It is equipped with a high-end front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension setup.
- Ride Quality: The presence of Air Suspension suggests that while the SUV looks hardcore, it aims to provide premium on-road comfort and adjustable ground clearance for light trails.
Whether this will be a “pure” hardcore off-roader or a “rugged-style” luxury urban SUV remains to be seen. However, early consumer clinics and market research have reportedly yielded extremely high praise for the vehicle’s design and positioning.
